Marilyn Manson will give "The Dope Show," the first single from the band's highly anticipated new album "Mechanical Animals," its live debut on Thursday night's MTV Video Music Awards.

For the band's frontman and namesake, the ode to the underside of the pop world's glitz and glamour couldn't have a more fitting coming out party.

"I couldn't have dreamed it any other way," Manson told our colleagues in the MTV Radio Network during Wednesday rehearsals for this year's VMAs. "It couldn't be any more appropriate."

The Manson who takes the stage this year will be a far more glammed-up edition than the "Antichrist Superstar" model who tore the house down last year with a version of "The Beautiful People." Even though Manson's 1997 performance (and his bare-bottom black leather ensemble) is still etched in the public consciousness, he's not too worried about topping that show-stopping outing.

"I don't try to outdo anything I've done," Manson said on Wednesday. "You're only as good as the thing that you're doing, so I just try to the best every time."

Manson will put his best platform boot forward Thursday night on the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, where he joins a list of performers that includes Madonna, Hole, the Beastie Boys, Master P, the Backstreet Boys, the Dave Matthews Band, and more. The show gets underway at 8 p.m., and MTV News pre-show coverage (including interviews with Madonna and Hole and reports from the red carpet) will kick off at 6:30.
