The painting was given to friend Johnny Depp as a gift. The Three-Legged Dog From Bangladesh was painted the day Manson learned of Thompson's death on February 20, 2005.

The painting is based on a Polaroid picture that Manson took of Thompson the last day they were together, intending to adapt it into a painting. Like the painting, Thompson had handcuffs around his neck and was upset in the original Polaroid.
