Nine Inch Nails was formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for the musical direction of the band. Trent Reznor liked the band and signed them onto his label, Nothing Records. Marilyn Manson opened for Nine Inch Nails during the Self Destruct tour in 1994, and in 2000 after a reconciliation with frontman Trent Reznor, Manson joined the band onstage singing "Starfuckers, Inc.". Manson also made a cameo appearance in the music video for the Nine Inch Nails song "Gave Up", as well as both co-directing and appearing in the video for "Starfuckers, Inc.".

Twiggy Ramirez and Chris Vrenna were among the band's members, although both left the band in 2007 and 1997 respectively. Many frequent Manson collaborators such as Sean Beavan, Charlie Clouser, Danny Lohner and Dave Ogilvie have also been, at one point, NIN collaborators.

The band has stopped playing live as of late 2009.
