The 1997/05/09 Washington, DC performance took place on May 9th, 1997 at the DC Armory in Washington, DC, USA. It is the 22nd show of the Arena Tour leg of the Dead to the World tour.

Tragedy

As noted in Manson's autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, 30-year-old Sean McGrann, a member of the band's lighting crew, fell to his death while setting up equipment for the show. McGrann was said to have been drinking with friends before the accident occurred.[1] Manson opened 'Sweet Dreams' by stating "This is for Sean."

  1. During the opening bars of "Cake and Sodomy": "Welcome to the bible belt, motherfuckers"
  2. Prior to the opening bars of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)": "This is for Sean"
  3. Immediately following "The Beautiful People": "My beautiful people. It's been a long fucking road to come to Washington, DC. They tried to cancel us at Giants stadium and they lost. They tried to cancel us at Richmond, Virginia and they lost. And they tried to fucking stop you from coming they fucking lost. We will no longer be oppressed by the fascism of Christianity. And we will no longer be oppressed by the police state mentality. Are you gonna believe in a god that doesn't believe in you? Sing with me..." He then began a chant of "Shoot shoot shoot motherfucker" which led into "The Reflecting God"
  4. Following "The Reflecting God" the lights came up for a brief interlude. After the lights lowered again Manson appeared draped in the American flag and stated "I know for sure that Washington, DC is no longer a part of the United fucking States of America. So we're gonna start our own national anthem." He then began a chant of "We hate love, we love hate" which led into "Irresponsible Hate Anthem"
  5. Following "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" Manson stated "Is that all you're looking for? I've got a song that's specially designed just for Washington, DC." jumping directly into "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger".

Support

"Helmet" and "Rasputina" were the scheduled opening acts. "Helmet" did not perform for unknown reasons, however "Helmet" sampler tapes were handed out to people waiting in line.
