Portrait of an American Family opens with Brian reciting the words spoken by Willy Wonka during the “Boat Scene” in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The words were originally in placed in a song by Manson called “Choklit Factory” which was written about the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, and featured an off-color beat and electric guitar. Prelude is not really even a song, but read more like the poem, originally written by Roald Dahl. “Prelude” sets the mood for the rest of the album, and for Marilyn Manson at the time. It’s creepy, it’s comical, and only Marilyn Manson could make a children’s poem sound so fucking hardcore.
