Marilyn Manson: 'I deserve a Grammy for all the things I've been blamed for' - video[edit]

Singer also tells NME why he opted to call his new album 'Born Villain'[edit]

May 10, 2012 15:57

Marilyn Manson has spoken about the inspiration behind his new album 'Born Villain' and how he considers himself to be the most blamed person "in the history of music".

Speaking to NME in a video which you can see by scrolling up to the top of the page and clicking, (See note below) Manson spoke about why he'd named the album 'Born Villain' and said that his inspiration went right back to the public outcry after the Columbine (massacre) of 1999.

The massacre took place at Columbine High School when 12 students and one teacher were by murdered by teenagers Dylan Kleblod and Eric Harris. In the days afterwards, many reports said that the killers had been inspired to commit the murders by Manson's music, although it was later proved that they were not fans of his.

Speaking about the record's title, Manson said: "'Born Villain' is the perfect title for this record because it's who I am. It's a question of nature or nurture, are people raised to be villains or vilified like I have become?"

He continued: "When it comes to things like Columbine, it would have been different if they [Harris and Klebold] had actually liked my music, but I think that I have had more blame accredited to me then any person in the history of music. There should be some sort of Grammy for that."

Then asked how his new album differed from his previous efforts, Manson said that he wanted to make an album that was less personal. He also said that without recording 'Eat Me, Drink Me' and 'The High End Of Low', he "might not be here".

He said of this: "I just wanted to make an album that I would like to listen to and not make an album like the past two records."

He continued: "Not because I don't like the first past two records, but because in particular 'Eat Me, Drink Me' was me being personal for the first time and 'The High End Of Low' was a very sad record. They were necessary to have them for me, I had to write them, or I might not be here. I'm not a suicidal person, but I could have crumbled."

Then asked if he was feeling better now, he replied: "I now feel like I'm in control of my life, before I was unhappy and when someone is unhappy, it's because they're not in control of their life. I'm not a masochist. I'm simply into trying to enjoy what I do, because otherwise there's no point."

Marilyn Manson will play a special, one-off show at London's O2 Academy Brixton on July 5. The singer had been originally booked to play Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth Park over the weekend of July 6-8 until the event was cancelled.
