When Marilyn Manson flew down to Shreveport, Louisiana to film his role on the upcoming season of Salem, it got him thinking about music again.
"It did bring back memories of creating Antichrist Superstar, which, strangely enough, October is the 20th anniversary of," he tells Rolling Stone, referencing his breakthrough LP that he'd worked on in New Orleans. "I found the supernatural element of the show to be very authentic when I lived in New Orleans: the hoodoo, voodoo, all the Santeria, it was all very much a part of my surroundings when I was making the music I made down there. Maybe that kickstarted my mojo into making a new album."
This February, Manson will release SAY10 (say the title out loud to enjoy its full effect). As with his 2015 LP The Pale Emperor, Manson worked on the songs with composer Tyler Bates while the latter worked on the score for Salem. Currently, they're putting the finishing touches on the record. But Manson says fans of the gothier material of the last record will be surprised with what they hear on SAY10.
"It's not very much in any way like The Pale Emperor," he says. "The people who have heard the new songs said it reminded them of their favorite parts of Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals – but with a new, different approach.
"It's pretty violent in its nature for some reason," he says. "And it's not emotional in the same way. It's got a chip on its shoulder. I enjoyed doing it. I can't wait for people to hear it. I think they're going to be quite surprised."
The singer first teased SAY10 in July during an interview at the Alternative Press Music Awards. "It's not even a pun," he said of title. "It's worse than a pun. It's wordplay." At the time, he said it would come out on Valentine's Day.
