Trivia[edit]

THE mother of a bullied Scots schoolgirl who killed herself told last night how she was comforted by Satanist shock rocker Marilyn Manson.

Rona Raphael, 48, met daughter Nicola's idol after his outrageous appearance at the weekend's Gig on the Green festival in Glasgow. And she said Manson tenderly hugged her in his backstage dressing room - just minutes after showing a picture of tragic Nicola to the crowd and dedicating a song to her. Rona said: "I was so touched that this mega-star took time out to meet me. Despite all the controversy about him and his shows, he just seemed like a normal man to me. He was very caring and considerate." Nicola, of Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, was just 15 when she took her own life two months ago. She had been bullied at her school, Lenzie Academy, over her Goth lifestyle, clothes and make-up. It had always been Nicola's dream to see Manson live but she was buried along with her ticket for Saturday's show. And Manson was so moved by her story that he asked to meet mum Rona after the show. Rona said: "When I walked in to his dressing room he just got up from his seat, shook my hand and gave me a big hug. "He said he was so sorry about Nicola and that it was so unfair that someone as young as her could be taken out of the world. He had removed all his make-up but I noticed he still had his weird contact lens in. "He was asking me about Nicola and somehow seemed to understand what I am going through. "I know that nothing is going to bring Nicola back but I found the experience of meeting Marilyn incredibly helpful. "Marilyn and his kind of music played a huge part in Nicola's life, so it was great to meet him and tell him that." During the show, Manson had shown the crowd a blown-up picture of Nicola while he dedicated the song Fight On to her. Thousands of fans cheered as he told them: "I think you should all know that there's a girl named Nicola who got beaten up every day in school. Until she couldn't take it anymore and she killed herself. This song is for her." The massive crowd at Glasgow Green roared its approval but Rona collapsed in tears and had to be helped away from the stage by a friend. Rona added: "He didn't have to do that for me but I'm so glad he did. "There were a lot of Nicola's friends at the concert and this will have been a very special moment for them as well." A Manson tour spokesman last night paid tribute to the Record for bringing Nicola's story to his attention. He said: "As soon as Marilyn heard about it he was keen to meet Rona. He was really very moved by the story which is why he dedicated the song to her." Nicola died after taking an overdose of painkillers just days after successfully completing her Standard Grade exams. Grieving Rona has demanded a public apology from the school and last week met headmaster Roddy McLelland in a two-hour showdown. She has claimed that the school would rather ignore complaints of bullying than deal with it. She said: "I want answers. But I am getting none."
