  • In June 2013, Marilyn Manson discussed the direction for the new album, in the midst of the Masters of Madness tour, with Riverfront Times, saying:
It's still personal but different. I guess it would be more like...I wouldn't say what my first record was like, but the state of mind that I was in. Maybe it's this whole Alice Cooper thing that is definitely triggering childhood memories. I surround myself with a very different crowd of people than I have usually, lately. I almost got shot in a drive-by last night. So that was fun. I don't think it was intended for...I just heard a lot of gunfire in the area that I was recording. Let's just put it that way.

  • On January 2014, Marilyn Manson mentioned the new album in an interview with Kerrang magazine:
HAVE YOU GIVEN ANY THOUGHTS ON HOW YOU’RE GOING TO MARK THE OCCASION?

“It’s going to be quite different from anything I’ve ever done before. I want something that makes me rethink, in the same way that when I had my first show, I made a flyer, I didn’t have any songs written, and thought, ‘What am I going to do now?’ I’m excited to see what it’s gonna be. I want to give people what they want, though there’s a difference between being a chef and a waiter. • On February 1, 2014, 'Sons of Anarchy' creator Kurt Sutter posted a video for his YouTube channel, WTFSutter, where he mentions working with Marilyn Manson, and listening to tracks from Manson's upcoming new album:
I’m actually collaborating; I hope he doesn't mind me saying this, with Marilyn Manson on some music. There’s a song I wrote lyrics for that I gave to Shooter Jennings who’s a buddy of mine and a great musician, that I thought I’d use on Season 6 of the show…and Shooter did the music for and it was cool, and we ended up stripping it down a little bit, and I ultimately didn’t have a place for it. And Shooter started working with Manson on a couple of things, and then gave the lyrics to him, and Manson dug it, and we connected and have been hanging out a little bit, and he may do a cover of that song. But, I’ve heard some songs off his unreleased new record coming out, and I’d love to use at least one of them, maybe more this season on the show...

Sutter goes on describing the new music, saying:

I just find these songs to be not as…and I hope he doesn’t mind me saying this, they just feel a lot more personal and raw and less theatrical, if that makes sense…They’re really cool, and the lyrics are sick."

  • On February 2014, drummer Gil Sharone posted a photo from studio with Marilyn Manson and producer Tyler Bates.
  • On April 24, 2014 the first song from the album, "Cupid Carries a Gun", makes a debut on WGN's Salem TV show. [1]
"Manson and I wrote a draft of 'Cupid Carries a Gun' shortly before I began working on the score for Salem," says Bates. "A couple weeks later I saw the title sequence and the song immediately came to mind. I showed it to Manson for fun more than anything, and it inspired us to finish the song that night. The next day I played it for Brannon Braga and he said that 'Cupid Carries a Gun' was the perfect tone and attitude for the show's main titles."

  • In June 2014, preceding his controversial (and ultimately cancelled performances), in Moscow and Novosibirsk, Russia's Radio RockFM interviewed Manson, where he talked briefly about the upcoming album (in a loose transition from the original Russian article to English):
My new album will be different from what I've produced before. He imbued with the spirit of rock 'n' roll, in particular the influence of The Doors. It still has some cinematic, because I worked with Tyler Bates, who created the soundtracks to the films "300" and "Watchmen." Therefore, the album sounds like a movie, and I love it. I always wanted to create music Bible, but not in the Christian sense, but rather in terms of its universality. This album defies all charges against me, it reflects every aspect of my personality. Very large role assigned texts of songs that are inspired by Greek mythology, its symbolism, which are the source of all art forms. For me it was a great pleasure to work on this album, because I was finally able to open up in its true essence, to become the person I always wanted to be.
