MansonWiki was an idea founder Litso conceived early in 2006. His plan was to build a self-made content management system from scratch, which would include a wiki-based Marilyn Manson encyclopedia, a tag-based and user-submitted image gallery, forums and an online radio station dedicated to the band's music. The idea however dissipated until March 2007, when Litso noticed a thread on The Heirophant Council requesting a Marilyn Manson wiki. Litso's response to the thread was the creation of MansonWiki, which started life on his home server, before being relocated to his own web domain, www.litso.com.

In December 2009, Litso announced he no longer had the time or energy to pour into MansonWiki. He was contacted by several people who were interested in taking over the responsibilities of the website and shortly afterward, he passed the reigns to [god]speed and ‡-me-‡. Initially, Litso and GrislyGrizzly formally announced their departures together, however ‡-me-‡ convinced Litso to stay with the project, citing the importance for MansonWiki to maintain its original founder. Privately, Litso also managed to talk GrislyGrizzly out of his departure.

The newly appointed administrators began to diligently promote MansonWiki, as they began to lay the framework for what would become the current design of the website. Their vision was to create an entirely new infrastructure for MansonWiki, fusing together elements of MediaWiki with a more visually appealing website. This concept resonated well with Litso and GrislyGrizzly, who had a similar goal earlier in the year before Jones' departure.

Litso and Vixen Windstorm era

MansonWiki was an idea founder Litso conceived early in 2006. His plan was to build a self-made content management system from scratch, which would include a wiki-based Marilyn Manson encyclopedia, a tag-based and user-submitted image gallery, forums and an online radio station dedicated to the band's music. The idea however dissipated until March 2007, when Litso noticed a thread on The Heirophant Council requesting a Marilyn Manson wiki. Litso's response to the thread was the creation of MansonWiki, which started life on his home server, before being relocated to his own web domain, www.litso.com.

Shortly after MansonWiki went online, it was discovered by Vixen Windstorm, known at the time by an earlier username. When Litso returned to MansonWiki in May of that year, he noticed Windstorm's contributions and was inspired to continue actively building the website, appointing Windstorm as his second administrator. With the website now taken more seriously, Litso relocated it one last time from litso.com/mansonwiki to mansonwiki.com, where it remains today. In November 2007, another esteemed user named JarvisGanon was promoted to MansonWiki's third administrator. Litso and Windstorm worked closely behind the scenes to expand the website, culminating with the introduction of MansonWiki Forums on May 4, 2008.[1]

Following this, Litso entered talks with a coder whose name was only disclosed as Jones to continue overhauling MansonWiki, distancing it from overly recognizable MediaWiki tropes,[2] which also included plans to merge MansonWiki and MansonWiki Forums into "one entity, so that the website can be looked at as more of a Marilyn Manson fan community anyone can edit and update, rather than a Marilyn Manson wiki with a forum that gets more action than the wiki itself. Imagine an editable Heirophant."[2][3] This overhaul was delayed when Jones exited the partnership, however both Litso and Windstorm's personal lives at the time also had an effect on the stall.

[god]speed and ‡-me-‡ era

In December 2009, Litso announced he no longer had the time or energy to pour into MansonWiki. He was contacted by several people who were interested in taking over the responsibilities of the website and shortly afterward, he passed the reigns to [god]speed and ‡-me-‡. Initially, Litso and Windstorm formally announced their departures together, however ‡-me-‡ convinced Litso to stay with the project, citing the importance for MansonWiki to maintain its original founder. Privately, Litso also managed to talk Windstorm out of his departure.

The newly appointed administrators began to diligently promote MansonWiki, as they began to lay the framework for what would become the current design of the website. Their vision was to create an entirely new infrastructure for MansonWiki, fusing together elements of MediaWiki with a more visually appealing website. This concept resonated well with Litso and Windstorm, who had a similar goal earlier in the year before Jones' departure.

In February 2010, MansonWiki launched a senior editor program, wherein exemplary users were given a greater degree of control over the information submitted to the website but were not considered MansonWiki officials. The first senior editors of MansonWiki were Yawaraey, I4ig0, M1shael and Lagozzino. Many other additions were made to the website, including sections dedicated to lyrics, interview archives, tablature and photo galleries. By the middle of February 2010, the new design of MansonWiki was completed and awaited coding. After two months, MansonWiki contacted Antickon, the programmer responsible for Marilyn Manson's modern message board, Babalon. By the end of April 2010, MansonWiki began testing and planning for the launch of the new design.

On May 13, 2010, the second incarnation of MansonWiki went live after a successful viral campaign which consisted of teaser trailers and mysterious codes and number sequences, partially inspired by the band's use of Celebritarian codes. Fans also received personal invitations through email and social networking to pay a visit to the new website. Furthermore, MansonWiki even relaunched with its first exclusive interview, where it spoke with professional photographer Anthony Silva, a friend of Manson whose related contributions are featured in the Eat Me, Drink Me liner booklet and the incomplete film Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. Since its redesign, other contemporary additions were pushed forth such as embedded YouTube videos and a Facebook Like button for Facebook. The ability to view MansonWiki in different languages was also considered but eventually scrapped.

On March 17, 2011, ‡-me-‡ privately resigned from MansonWiki. Two days later, Litso publicly announced her departure as well as that of [god]speed. He soon found a reliable replacement in Harlequin on March 24, 2011.

On June 15, 2012, Litso announced his departure from MansonWiki, followed by Windstorm taking his leave on June 21. Both users have since contributed only a short number of edits since stepping down. In their absence, Sumer Schmetterling was appointed senior editor and manager of the website's Tumblr account on July 21, 2012.

Scarshock era

Another departure came on December 20, 2013, when Harlequin decided to focus on personal projects elsewhere. Full administrative access was given to M1shael, Sumer Schmetterling and Scarshock, the latter being the only user to remain active to this day.

On February 17, 2016, MansonWiki went completely offline due to technical reasons. These issues were not eliminated until April 9, 2016, when the website returned after nearly two months of downtime.

On October 23, 2018 MansonWiki reached 4000 articles.

Contests

MansonWiki was previously known for holding contests rewarding members of the community for building it and using it as a research tool. The website's earliest contest occurred in December 2008 and called for editors to write an informative article about Isani Griffith.[4] During the administration of [god]speed and ‡-me-‡, the two webmasters fully embraced contests and surveys, such as the June 2010 Arma-goddamn-motherfuckin-geddon Contest asking users 15 questions that could be solved by browsing MansonWiki articles.[5] The following month in August 2010, 15 more questions were prepared, with the winner of this quiz being awarded another vinyl release.[6] The final contest to date has been MansonWiki's Got Talent, where users submitted their own performances of Marilyn Manson songs. Five finalists were selected by MansonWiki staff and the contest winner was chosen by a community vote.
