John 5
Guitarist, Workaholic And Drug-Free Zone...

Kerrang: Where and when did you first meet Marilyn Manson?
John 5: "I’m not sure. The first time I spoke to him was when I called to apply for the guitarist’s job. That was actually before the last guitarist (John 5’s predecessor Zim Zum) joined, so I had a bit of a wait before I actually joined the band."
Kerrang: What were your first impressions of him?
John 5: "That he was a cool guy. He’s also very focused, he knows what he wants and he’s willing to work hard to get it. That’s good for me because I’ve been supporting myself in music since I was 18 or 19 years old, so it’s good to meet someone who works just as hard, actually harder, than myself."
Kerrang: You’re not the first guitar player in Marilyn Manson. Do you feet secure about your position in the band?
John 5: "I don’t really worry about being kicked Out. I think that if I play the parts right and participate and do a good job then why would they want to hurt the band by looking for another guitar player? At first when I joined it was kind of tough because they’d all give me a hard time but now we’re all good friends so I’m not very concerned about getting kicked out."
Kerrang: Why do you think ' Mechanical Animals' didn’t live up to commercial expectations?
John 5: "I think that it did match them. I think that it did better than ' Antichrist Superstar' and some of the shows we played were just huge, massive shows. So as far as I’m concerned I think that it did meet them. I was pretty happy."
Kerrang: What’s the best and worst thing about being in Marilyn Manson?
John 5: "The best thing for me is listening to something that you worked so hard on and going, 'Man, that’s really good!'. The worst thing about being in the band? You know, I don’t really have any bad things to say. let’s say jet lag."
Kerrang: Do you still like the drugs?
John 5: "Well I don’t do drugs. But, honestly, the other guys call me in the middle of the night and I worry that something really bad is going to happen. Seriously, I fear for those guys ‘cos they party harder than anybody I’ve ever seen in my life. With these guys, every night is like New Year’s Eve. And I just don’t want someone to die. I don’t want the band to be over."
