Lyrics

Do you or don't you want this to be your song?
It doesn't take a rebel to sing along.
   This art is weak
   in its pretty, pretty frame
and I am a monkey with
   a misspelled name
   "I'll put down your disco
   and take you heart away"
   "I'll put down your disco
   and take your heart away"
   I'll be born again

   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you
   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you

do you or don't you want to take this hit?
Does it make you feel like you're a part of "it."
   "I'll put down your disco
   and take you heart away"
   "I'll put down your disco
   and take your heart away"
   I am born again

   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you
   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you

the valley of the dolls is
   the valley of the dead
the valley of the dolls is
   the valley of the dead
   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you
   I'm someone else
   I'm someone new
I'm someone stupid just like you

   I'll be born again...

Trivia

  • The liner notes say this song was recorded at the same time as Irresponsible Hate Anthem, February 14th, 1997, despite the album being released in 2000.
  • In the book Art That Kills by George Petros a handwritten note with the Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) tracklist on "Born Again" was listed as "Valley of the Dolls". Apparently, this was the song's working title.
  • The line "I'll put down your disco and take your heart away" alludes to Charles Manson's reply in an interview with Charlie Rose when asked what he would say if he could write a song right now. He responded "you better bow down disco, I'm going to take your heart away".
  • The line "the valley of the dolls is the valley of the dead" allegories Jaqueline Susann's novel Valley Of The Dolls. Interestingly, the 1967 film adaptation (of the same name) featured Manson Family murder victim Sharon Tate portraying the character Jennifer (who dies of a drug overdose), who was allegedly based upon Marilyn Monroe.
