Marilyn Manson has decided to postpone the last five dates of his current tour out of respect for those killed in the recent tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
In a message posted on Manson's official website, the performer wrote: "People are trying to sort out what happened and to deal with their losses. It's not a great atmosphere to be out playing rock [and] roll shows, for us or the fans."
Manson also shot back at conservative activists and those in the media who have blamed him and his macabre music for somehow spurring the Columbine shootings. "The media has unfairly scapegoated the music industry and so-called Goth kids," Manson wrote, "and has speculated - with no basis in truth - that artists like myself are in someway to blame. This tragedy was a product of ignorance, hatred, and an access to guns."
Last week, a radio-sponsored concert in Denver that was to feature Manson was cancelled after the city's mayor expressed concerns about the show's timing to the station and the event's promoters (see "Marilyn Manson Concert, Other Denver Events Cancelled In Wake Of High School Shooting").
Manson will now wrap up his American tour following a show tonight in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. No word yet on when he plans to reschedule the concerts, but the dates affected by the postponement include:
- 5/3 - Reno, NV @ Lawlor Events Center
- 5/4 - Fresno, CA @ Selland Arena
- 5/5 - Las Vegas, NV @ The Joint
- 5/7 - Phoenix, AZ @ Arizona Memorial Coliseum
- 5/8 - Universal City, CA @ Universal Amphitheater
