"Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" is the first and only single and the sixth track of the first EP Smells Like Children, originally written and performed by Eurythmics in 1982. The song became an MTV-staple and helped to establish the band in the mainstream. Manson often comes up with song inspiration in his dreams, but the idea to cover this song came from his first acid trip, according to his autobiography, The Long Hard Road Out of Hell. He says that he hallucinated a "slower, meaner" version of the dance hit playing, sung in his voice. The earliest performance of the song dates back to June 1, 1994.

Music video[edit]

In the music video, the band performs in an old, decrepit asylum while wearing a variety of strange costumes. Many pigeons and a pig, which Manson rides during the climax, are also seen in the video. The video was a gateway to popularity for the band. The video was directed by Dean Karr.

Lyrics[edit]

sweet dreams are made of these
    who am i to disagree?
travel the world and the seven seas
    everybody's looking for something
some of them want to use you
some of them want to get used by you
some of them want to abuse you
some of them want to be abused
sweet dreams are made of these
    who am i to disagree?
travel the world and the seven seas
    everybody's looking for something
some of them want to use you
some of them want to get used by you
some of them want to abuse you
some of them want to be abused
i wanna use you and abuse you
i wanna know what's inside you
hold your head up, movin' on
keep your head up, movin' on
sweet dreams are made of these
    who am i to disagree?
travel the world and the seven seas
    everybody's looking for something
some of them want to use you
some of them want to get used by you
some of them want to abuse you
some of them want to be abused
i'm gonna use you and abuse you
    i'm gonna know what's inside
gonna use you and abuse you
i'm gonna know what's inside you
